A very underrated drill in my opinion. I'm on my 2nd drill in 15+ years of using one (including the old red battery version of the same) decent enough for most jobs as long as you don't go beyond the specs

I bought one of these drills with two batteries as it was cheaper at the time than buying the two batteries separately.
Was surprised how much abuse this thing will take without breaking.
Perfect tool for an apprentice or someone who will just abuse it.

A good solid drill that’s worked well for me over the years. Battery life is now pretty poor, however. But this may just be normal life expectancy? It can slip out of gear occasionally - again, perhaps a sign of age and use. But it’s probably 15 years old now

Pretty basic but good enough for most things. Never really used the hammer for anything however.
Not the best they have to offer but slightly better than basic diy.

Bought one of these as part of of two pice kit on offer from Screwfix. Was very disappointed with the drills lack of torque. I retained the charger , battery packs and impact drivers. I stashed this drill away in the back of a cupboard ( try selling it on eBay but no takers at £30 it was only used twice). Have bought a more powerful bare Makita Combi drill.

Was my first 18v dill had it for a good few years and it’s done me well, it’s good to start off with but I would say this is for diy use mainly if you don’t do much, if your looking for something to use everyday then I wouldn’t recommend as it’s not powerful enough

A very basic combi drill. I’d say they are more of a diy level drill. Haven’t got a lot of power and tend to brake easy if being pushed to much. Ok for very light use though!

Having got this drill / driver as part of Makita kit it’s a really handy addition for an extra drill to save changing bits over.
The fact that the batteries all fit is brilliant so that you aren’t using several different types and you can add to kit as all interchangeable.
Great and well price cordless drill.

Bought a cheap one as a back up, didn’t expect much from it due to the price, but it certainly keeps up with my DHP458.
May not be as rugged but for drilling and screwing its not a bad bit of kit.

Got one as a freebie so can't really complain but to be honest great little work horse, can use the whole range of 18v batteries from 1amp to 6amp. The torque is adequate for most jobs as is the hammer function. Use for everything from drilling to driving as a general tool.

This is a good entry level Makita that doesn't cost the Earth but mine is still going 3 years later! Sees a good bit of action too. Obviously there is better out there, especially in the battery department, but good luck finding it as reasonably priced!

This is the first tool I bought in the LXT range about 3 years ago.I find it to be A fantastic drill I’ve never had any problems with it it’s done everything I have ever asked of it and it still going strong three years later with the original batteries. Apparently this is classed more as a DIYers drill ,I have to say for the first two years (I now use the smaller 10.8 drill Combi set as my goto) i used this drill on a daily basis and cannot recommend enough. I still load into my van daily just in case my little 10.8 can’t handle something.

FAQs
Are Makita drills any good? ›
Makita Drill Buying Tips
They are one of the best drills on the market and great value for money. There are a few things you need to remember before you make a purchase though. Many of these drills will come as "body only" so that means you will have to buy the battery as well.
Makita DHP453
It has a brushed motor, 2-speed gearbox with plastic housing, a plastic chuck, 16 torque settings and will deliver 42Nm of torque.
Drilling mode (rotation only) achieving 130Nm max. torque.
What is the difference between Makita DHP484 and DHP485? ›What Makes the Makita DHP484 better than the DHP485. The Makita DHP484 has better blows per minute, this helps give it better performance when in hammer mode drilling into masonry. The DHP484 has slightly better RPM, this will help give it better performance in general drilling and if using as a screwdriver.
Which is the better make Makita or DeWalt? ›In general, Makita has a reputation for being a step up in quality compared to DeWalt with a higher price tag to go along with it. However, both brands are considered to be professional-level tools across the board.
What does LXT mean on Makita drills? ›Makita LXT (Lithium-Ion Extreme Techonology) is a battery system used by most high-end Makita power tools since approximately 2005. LXT batteries and tools use a slide-on format and are designed to work at 18 volts and some also at 14.4 volts. Chargers and batteries are common across the range of power tools.
What is the difference between Makita DDF and DHP? ›While both models are extremely similar and use Makita 18V Li-Ion batteries, the main difference between them is that DHP drills feature a hammer action while the DDF drills do not.
Why is Makita brushless better? ›The Makita Brushless motor is precision engineered to be up to 50% more efficient than a comparative model. This means a fully charged 18v lithium-ion battery will last almost twice as long as a product running on a standard motor.
What is the difference between Makita LXT and G Series? ›The G-series range from Makita is a different lithium-ion battery platform to the Makita LXT range of professional cordless power tools, and is powered exclusively by the G-Series battery and DC18WA charger.
What is a good torque for a combi drill? ›Assembling furniture and decking, drilling plasterboard, wood (35 mm), steel (13 mm) and concrete (15 mm). Choose a combi-drill with a hammer mode and 2 Li-ion batteries (18 V and 4 or 5 Ah) a 13 mm keyless chuck, 2,100 rpm, a torque of 70 Nm and 31,000 strokes/minute.
What is a good torque for a cordless drill? ›
For light screw work, a torque of 25Nm is sufficient. If you choose a drill with a torque of between 25 and 50Nm, you can use it for all the usual jobs in and around the house. With more than 50Nm, even professionals will have enough power for heavy screw work.
Which Makita drill has the most torque? ›The premium 18V LXT® Brushless ½” Hammer Driver-Drill (XPH14) delivers a full 1,250 in. lbs. of Max Torque, the most in the category.
What's the difference between green Makita and black Makita? ›A: The difference would be the Size/weight and drill/driving capabilities the green would be the larger or heavier while the white is compact and the black is the subcompact. I've owned all and would recommend any for their own reasons, job depending.
Which is better DeWalt or Milwaukee or Makita? ›Milwaukee comes out on top.
Neither DeWalt nor Makita can beat the toughness and durability of these tools. I know, some of you have mentioned that we're not taking Makita's pro range into account. And, yes, that may be so, but some of my workmates are using the Makita pro range and they're just not as good.
Whether you're looking for battery powered tools like a cordless drill, or corded tools like some of their circular saws, Makita is a great brand to pick. Makita is one of the best tool brands on the market and I highly recommend them to any woodworker out there.
Are DeWalt and Makita the same? ›Both DeWalt vs Makita are titans in the industry and it isn't without reason. They are both known for high-quality products, but Makita does have a reputation of being a higher tier than DeWalt. As usual, products that are considered higher quality also come with a higher cost.
